Your Habits May Be Harming Your Vision
Sometimes we don’t notice how our daily habits affect our eyesight. But if we do not pay attention to such habits and correct them, we just can’t protect our vision in years to come.
So, here are a few habits that you must break for a healthy vision:
1. Long Screen Hours
We are leading lives where we spend too much time staring at either our phone screens or laptop screens. And we get so engrossed that we forget blinking, which is extremely important for lubrication and cleaning of the eye. Moreover, the stress on eyes due to long screen hours can result in burning eyes, headaches, and severe eye strain that lead to bad vision.
2. Improper Diet
Leafy greens, colorful fruits, fish, etc. are known to keep our vision healthy. However, we do not ensure that we are getting the necessary minerals, vitamins, and fatty acids from our diet. And this results in bad eyesight over time. So, alter your diet and include foods that improve eyesight and also prevent age-related eye diseases.
3. Carelessness with Contact Lenses
When wearing lenses, the supply of oxygen to the eye is limited. So, if they are worn for long hours, the risk of eye infections such as keratitis increases. Long-term use of lenses can also result in corneal scarring. Moreover, contact lenses shouldn’t be worn in showers or pools because it allows bacteria into the eye, which can cause vision damage.
4. Use of Expired Makeup
As per the American Academy of Ophthalmology, eye makeup should be discarded after 3 months of its use. Old or expired eye makeup can irritate your eyes and can also give you a bad eye infection. And in the long run, it can lead to poor vision.
Smoking is associated with the risk of age-related macular degeneration and cataract. While age-related macular degeneration can lead to bad eyesight, cataract can make you go blind with age. The risk is almost double for smokers who are 50 years or older.
6. Improper Lighting
If you’re reading or working in poor light, it becomes difficult for eyes to focus, and the strain on them increases. So, make sure that the rooms are properly lit to serve their purpose. For example, put a lamp on the kids’ study table and your work table.
7. Low-Quality Sunglasses
Harmful UV rays from the sun can affect your vision just like they affect your skin. So, you must not walk out in extreme sunlight if you do not have sunglasses on. It is also important to buy a pair of sunglasses that block UV rays. After all, the main purpose of wearing sunglasses should be protecting the eyes.
8. No Eye Doctor Visits
Many people experience vision problems that could have been resolved if their eye doctor caught them soon enough. So, do not overlook the importance of regular visits to your optometrist. You should get your eyes examined every year so that you can prevent the problem from becoming serious.
Be extra careful to be able to protect your eyes. And if you experience any discomfort, visit your eye doctor right away. Ignoring poor vision and minor eye issues can lead to serious and irreversible effects.
